The Myths About Botox from The Townshend Skin Clinic

There are a lot of myths about Botox so talking to a doctor to get all the facts before treatment is important. It is not a new or dangerous treatment and in the right hands it is extremely safe, effective and gives natural looking results. Botox works by weakening the power of muscles that cause unwanted wrinkles or frowns. This results in a younger, fresher appearance. Not only are lines softened but they are prevented from getting worse as quickly as they would without treatment.

When looking for a Botox practitioner, do your homework first. What’s their level of training and what happens if you’re not happy with the service? Remember that Botox is a prescription drug which must be prescribed by a doctor (or nurse prescriber) and administered only after a thorough consultation. And remember that you will have greater protection at a clinic registered with Healthcare Commission.

I’ve heard that Botox is a poison. Is that true?

Botulinum toxin is produced by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum which can cause botulism (a type of food poisoning). In the tiny doses used to treat wrinkles and excessive sweating, there is no risk of this. Doctors have been using Botox for aesthetic reasons for over 25 years with no harm to health.

I’m worried about side effects. Are there any?

The vast majority of people have no side effects whatsoever. Rarely, some may complain of flu like symptoms or headache which can last for a few days and rarer still, some may be allergic. There will be mild swelling after treatment similar to a mosquito bite but these resolve quickly. There is a small chance of bruising but in most cases, no one should be able to tell that you’ve had anything done. The most unwanted effect occurs if botox leaks into an unwanted area or too much is used. This happens very rarely and can result in a droopy eyelid or brow which can last several weeks.

How long does Botox last & will it hurt?!

Performing the Botox treatment itself is very quick – just a few minutes. The effects last approximately 3 months and can be more if you have your treatment regularly. A very small micro-needle is used which can be uncomfortable but shouldn’t be painful, much like a mosquito bite.

If I stop having Botox, will I look worse than before?

No. If anything, you will look better. With Botox treatment, you are not able to crease your skin as much as before. This puts the brakes on making your wrinkles worse. Not only does Botox soften lines, it is also a preventative treatment.

I’m 25 years old. I am too young for Botox?

Not at all - I do not treat those under the age of 18 but there is no upper age limit. As already explained, Botox has a preventative action and starting treatments early will have future benefits. Some have treatment not for lines but because they frown a lot (e.g. in front of a computer screen) making them look angry or concerned when they’re not. Botox is an excellent treatment for those who suffer with excessive sweating of the armpits, hands or feet which affects people of all ages.
