Acne & acne scarring
We all get outbreaks of spots at some time in our lives but for some, these can be serious and persistent. 80% of people aged 11-30 will suffer with acne at some time.
What causes it?
Sebaceous glands in the skin produce sebum (the skin’s natural oil)
keeping it soft. Small channels called pores allow sebum to get from
the glands to the skin’s surface. These are the same pores through
which your hairs grow. Too much or very thick sebum can lead to blocked
pores which can then become infected resulting in black and whiteheads.
Unfortunately, some people have a severe form called ‘inflammatory
acne’ where cysts form and then burst enabling the infection to spread.
All of this can result in unsightly scars that that may be visible for
ever more.
What is the treatment?
Treatment for acne aims to do 2 things – cure the infection and prevent
it occurring in the first place. Antibiotics by mouth or in products
target infection whilst specialist products and treatments can help
with scarring. Bear in mind that acne scarring, if extensive, can be
difficult to treat and is unlikely to be removed completely. However,
whatever the severity of your problem, we can certainly improve matters.
We offer the following treatments which can help.
