Microdermabrasion:

Out with the old, in with the new!

We use beauty terms which become commonplace but their true definition is often lost. Many think of exfoliation as simply cleaning the skin but it is more than this. Exfoliation is the removing or shedding of the outmost layer of dead skin cells. This skin layer is called the stratum corneum and is a gnarly layer that gives our skin extra protection against the elements. Unfortunately, these dead skin cells are opaque and do not reflect light well giving your skin a dull and grey appearance. Healthy living skin cells are the opposite - clear and reflecting light well to give your skin a glowing and radiant complexion. So, it follows that if we exfoliate regularly, our skin will look brighter and feel smoother.

There are three main methods of exfoliation – natural, mechanical and chemical:

Natural – Skin will shed on its own accord but you will never get the plump healthy cells at the surface for that radiant appearance.

Mechanical – Using a rough surface or substance on the skin to encourage the removal of the dead cells.

Chemical – Using weak acids such as skin peels which I discussed last month.

Microdermabrasion sprays your skin with fine crystals to exfoliate. There are added benefits too: clearing out of blocked pores and black heads, lymphatic drainage is improved to drain away toxins and blood flow to the skin is increased bringing with it oxygen and nutrients.

If you are wanting to perk up your skin for a special occasion, a microdermabrasion a day or two before is just what the doctor ordered! Not only will your skin look fresher but your makeup will sit on that smooth canvas like a dream avoiding that dreaded bumpy look.

What can it help treat?

A course of treatment can help with the treatment of mild acne, poor tone & texture, dull lifeless skin, large pores and fine lines.

How long does it take and how often can I have it?

The appointment will take 30 mins. A good medical microdermabrasion should not be performed more often than every 3-4 weeks.

How will I look after?

Your skin will instantly be softer and smoother. You will be a little flushed which usually returns to normal in 30-60 minutes. After treatment, with the top layer of cells gone, it is more important than ever to use a good quality sun cream such as ASAP’s SPF 30 moisturiser.
