Dr Townshend’s skin tips

To moisturise or not?
Even those with the sparsest beauty regime will probably have a moisturiser in their cabinet. We’re taught from an early age that if we want good skin, this is what we must do. But is it true?
Moisturisers often feel and smell lovely – it’s unlikely that we would be persuaded to put them on our skin if they didn’t! But unless your moisturiser contains a good concentration of a proven anti-ageing ingredient, it’s unlikely to have a significant impact on your skin ageing. Look out for creams containing vitamin A derivatives or fruit acids/alpha hydroxyl acids (AHAs). However, most of these creams have limited effect as if they are potent enough to make real changes, they’ll be prescription only e.g. Obagi tretinoin.
Whatever you use, the action of massaging the skin each day will promote circulation and removal of toxins in that area. In some cases this may be more beneficial than the effect of the cream itself!
Fine lines and wrinkles can be softened temporarily with the use of moisturisers as they can "plump" dehydrated skin which makes the skin more taught. Think about a balloon that has leaked a little and then has that air replaced.
The most important thing your moisturiser can do is to contain an SPF to protect your skin from the damaging ageing effects of UV light. Use one every day with an SPF of at least 25 (15 is not good enough, especially in summer!)
Don’t forget – you skin produces oil that keeps it supple. If you have a very oily skin, there may be little to gain from using these creams and you could even encourage breakouts or make them worse. Using thick moisturisers can block pores and encourage the build up of bacteria. For the same reason, there’s little need to moisturise at night as your skin will sweat in your warm bed.
