Dr Townshend’s skin tips

With many people trying to lose extra weight gained over the Christmas period, this month I’m concentrating on the basics of weight loss. More often than not, clients who come for information regarding Advanced Laser Lipo are struggling with their weight but this treatment should not be performed on those whose weight is on the up. With so much detailed dietary advice available, it can be difficult to see the wood for the trees.

Ultimately, your weight is controlled by how many calories you ingest minus the number you burn off. Most people immediately think of gyms when trying to lose weight. Of course, you will burn calories at the gym and get great benefit for your cardivascular health. However, 30 mins hard running will only burn approx 300 calories which just about covers a Mars Bar! 3 good gym sessions a week won’t even cover a large Big Mac Meal. Another way to think of it is that NOT eating the Mars Bar is the calorific equivalent of going to the gym (and actually sweating) for 30mins. The bottom line is that if you don’t eat it, you don’t have to burn it off (or put it on as fat).

Back to Basics

  • Start with the shopping – if it’s not in the cupboard, you can’t eat it!

  • Buy low fat alternatives and always look at the label – how many calories are you putting into your mouth and how long will it take you to burn them off?

  • Encourage your partner/family to improve their diets. Households usually eat the same food so it’ll be tough eating healthy while watching others eat cake!

  • Buy smaller plates and have smaller portions –and trick your brain into thinking you’ve eaten more than you actually have.

  • Eat regular meals which will also help you stay away from unhealthy snacks.

  • Look out for "hidden" calories....those 2 chocolate biscuits with your cuppa can have 180 calories (another 18 minutes at the gym!). Do that each day and by the end of the week you’ve had more than half an entire day’s worth of calories just from a few biscuits! Cut out those biscuits and you could lose around 300g of fat without doing anything else! Just think, cut out those biscuits for 4 weeks and you could lose 1kg. So imagine what you could lose by making a few other changes too.

Of course, this is all simplified but start with the basics and you’ll get healthier and slimmer. You can worry about the small print once you’re on your way.
